College Counsellor

Salary £32K – £36K (pro rata) based on a 30-hour week.

The National Horseracing College seeks to employ a Counsellor to join its enthusiastic, vibrant, and hardworking team.  As one of only two specialist horseracing colleges in the UK, this third sector training provider delivers training for people in the racing industry.  Located in the scenic grounds of a private estate near Doncaster, it achieved Ofsted Grade 2 in 2016.

The College Counsellor position is a new one, and the successful candidate will be responsible for providing a high-quality counselling service to support learners, some of whom experience a range of emotional challenges, to ensure that safeguarding and the welfare of our young people is optimised.

  1. MAIN DUTIES

1.1             To offer counselling to learners for a range of issues including, learning difficulties, difficulties with peers, behavioural difficulties in the classroom or Residential Block, and emotional issues which may arise / be the result of traumatic experiences.

1.2             To work with learners experiencing mental health difficulties.

1.3             To conduct interventions as and when required.

1.4             To facilitate, alongside other colleagues, group sessions on issues which may include (for example) conflict resolution, anger management and low self-esteem.

1.5             To Liaise with Managers, Designated Safeguarding Lead, Designated Equality and Diversity Lead, the SENCO, and other colleagues, as necessary.

1.6.            To liaise with external professionals, such as GPs, and CAMHS, as necessary.

1.7             To create action plans and set goals with learners, ensuring they are achievable.

1.8             To keep accurate case records on each counselling / group session securely, in accordance with GDPR, updating the locker software as and when necessary.

1.9             To be aware and ensure compliance with legal requirements and internal policies with particular reference to Safeguarding.

1.10          To attend multi-agency meetings as and when appropriate / needed.

1.11          To provide regular audit information such as pupil characteristics and needs to inform future training and professional development.

1.12          To keep records of contact, hours, and emerging trends as part of monthly data accountability and reporting.

1.13          To continually review and evaluate the service.

1.14          To support the development and delivery of relevant training for colleagues as and when needs are identified.

To be selected for this interesting, challenging role, you must have excellent verbal and written skills, a minimum of 3-years practical experience of working with young people as a counsellor, a degree or Post-graduate Diploma in Counselling or Psychotherapy, BACP membership, UKCP registration or BCP.

Activity is focussed in the afternoons and early evenings, detailed hours to be negotiated.

The package on offer includes a salary of £32K-£36K (pro rata) per annum depending on experience, a contributory pension scheme and an initial holiday entitlement of 25-days (+Bank Hols) and Life Assurance (2x salary).

Full-Time Learning Support Assistant (37-hours per week)

Temporary Maternity Cover required from 12th July 2021 (12-month contract).

Salary £17,142.84 per annum

The National Horseracing College seeks to employ a full-time Learning Support Assistant to join its enthusiastic, vibrant, and hardworking team, to cover maternity leave.

To be selected for this interesting, challenging role, you must have practical experience of working with young people, and an understanding of the needs of young people from deprived backgrounds and/or with specialist needs. Experience in supporting teaching staff to deliver agreed learning activities to ensure that each individual learner meets their discrete learning needs. Equestrian knowledge and experience is essential and an understanding of the racing industry is desirable.

Hours of work: 37 per week: –

• Monday – Thursday (9.00am – 5.00pm)
• Friday (9.00am – 4.30pm)

There is a half-hour unpaid lunch break each day.

A contributory pension scheme, and an initial holiday entitlement of 25 days, plus Bank Holidays. This post is funded by the Community Fund. Bank Worker – Residential Cover

The National Horseracing College seeks to engage a bank worker to provide relief residential cover.  This would be adhoc work, to cover sporadic holidays and sickness.  Applicants must have experience of working with young people, preferably within a residential setting, good communication skills and a full driving licence.  The role involves the supervision and pastoral care of our learners outside of normal working hours.

Our shifts are as follows:-

  • 5.00pm – 10.30pm (Monday to Friday)
  • 10.00pm – 8.00am (Monday to Friday) – sleeping duty from 12.00pm
  • Saturday 8.00am – Sunday 8.00am
  • Sunday 8.00am – Monday 8.00am

The rates of pay are:

  • 8.00am – 12.00pm – £9.16 per hour + holiday pay
  • 12.00pm – 5.30am – £8.72 per hour + holiday pay
  • 5.30am – 8.00am – £9.16 per hour + holiday pay
