Ben’s loving his new hands-on role with the Jonjo O’Neill Team

A year ago Ben had never ridden a racehorse now he’s working towards a Level 2 Apprenticeship. He has responsibility for the daily care of seven horses and rides four lots (horses) on the gallops every morning. He also leads up lots of placed horses and is excitedly looking forward to leading his first winner into the hallowed winners enclosure.

In this short interview Ben talks us through a typical morning and all that it entails.

Racing staff work at speed as you’ll hear when Ben explains that he mucks out his first two lots (horses) and tacks up first lot (the first horse he is allocated to ride) in half an hour. It is important that we impress upon our students during the latter six weeks of their Foundation Course the speed at which they will be required to work once they become a racing groom. From the first day of every Foundation Course our focus is firmly on educating, training and producing students who are competent and who will hold down gainful employment.

The Foundation Course is the entry level course for anyone wishing to start their career in the horse racing industry. For more information please visit our website and follow the link to the Foundation Course:
