The Course
Category B Permit holders may ride in Flat Races confined to Amateur Riders, Steeplechase or Hurdle Races, except those confined to Licensed Conditional Jockeys, and in all National Hunt Flat Races.
The applicant must attend a five-day training course. To be eligible for this training, the rider must have had at least 15 completed rides under the Rules of Racing, the majority of which must be over obstacles or at least 20 completed rides in Point to Points and/or under the Rules of Racing. Generally, applications for Category B Permits are made by those who have already held a Category A Permit.
Important Information
Before attending a CAT B licence course, the delegate will have to organise screening with a BHA-approved Regional Jockey coach. This meeting will need to be organised and completed at least 2 weeks before the start of the course. It will consist of a professional 1-1 discussion and a simulator skills session, which will be compiled into a report. The screening is funded through the Rider Development Programme. To book a screening with a Jockey Coach, please contact Sarah Beattie via email s.beattie@thenhc.co.uk or call 01302 861000.
CAT B Licensed Jockeys who wish to advance to Conditional status will have to attend the Pre-Licence assessment and two-week licence course. Once they have obtained a CAT B licence, they have to wait a year to apply for a Conditional Licence course.
Course Cost
For amateur riders, there are a limited number of places funded by the British Horseracing Authority and once these places have been offered, the cost is £872.00 (inc VAT).
