We’re proud to welcome learners from overseas to the National Horseracing College.
The residential Foundation Course provides an introduction to the racing industry, combining practical training, riding and horse care with the opportunity to gain a Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care and Riding.

What Does the Programme Entail?
The 12-week residential Foundation Course is an entry-level programme designed to provide a practical introduction to working in the British horseracing industry.
The course is suitable for those with no previous horse experience, as well as those with considerable experience with horses but limited or no experience of working in racing. It provides an opportunity to develop existing knowledge and skills while gaining an understanding of the specific requirements of working with racehorses.
International learners follow the riding pathway, developing practical skills through hands-on experience with racehorses alongside classroom-based learning.
The programme includes:
- Horse care and stable management – learning how to care for racehorses and maintain high standards of stable management;
- Riding – developing riding skills and gaining practical experience riding racehorses;
- Practical training – gaining hands-on experience in the day-to-day work of a racing yard;
- Industry knowledge – learning about the roles, routines and standards involved in the horseracing industry;
- Health, safety and horse welfare – developing an understanding of safe working practices and the importance of horse welfare;
- Assessment – working towards the Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care and Riding
Living at the College for 12 weeks also provides the opportunity to experience a routine and working environment similar to that of a UK racing yard, while developing confidence, practical skills and an understanding of the industry.
The course is intensive and practical, so learners must be prepared to work outdoors, follow instructions carefully and take an active role in the daily care and exercise of the horses.
After the Foundation Course
The Foundation Course is a 12-week programme for international learners.
At the end of the course, international learners are expected to return to their home country. The international programme does not provide progression into a UK racing yard placement, apprenticeship or paid employment following completion of the Foundation Course.
The programme is designed to provide an introduction to British horseracing, together with practical skills, knowledge and experience that can be taken back to the learner’s home country.
When Can International Learners Start?
International learners can join Foundation Courses that start in April, May and June each year.
Applications are accepted ahead of these course dates, with video interviews taking place between November and April each year.
If successful following the interview, learners will be required to provide evidence that they are legally permitted to enter the UK and undertake the course. It is the learner’s responsibility to obtain the correct visa and any other documentation required.
English Language Requirement
Good spoken English is essential.
Because the Foundation Course involves working closely with racehorses, international learners must have sufficient spoken English to train safely and communicate effectively at the College.
Learners must be able to:
- Understand and follow instructions from instructors;
- Communicate effectively with instructors;
- Converse with other learners;
- Respond appropriately to instructions when working around horses;
- Participate fully in the practical training environment
Spoken English will be assessed during the video interview.
Interpreters cannot be used during the interview process. Learners must communicate directly with the interviewer in English.
If a learner’s spoken English is not sufficient to communicate safely and effectively in the training environment, a place will not be offered.
