Martin explains why it’s never too late to follow your dream

In this short video we meet Martin who attended the Foundation Course at the National Horseracing College earlier this year. Martin found himself getting into the racing game a little later in life and hasn’t looked back.

Prior to starting at the College Martin gained practical experience at a livery stables but with his passion being for racing he wanted to gain experience working with thoroughbreds prior to seeking employment in a racing yard. During his six-weeks at the NHC he learnt all the practical tasks associated with being a yard person and essentially how a racing yard is run.

Martin works mornings for jump trainer, Ruth Jefferson, at her stables in Norton which is just a couple of miles from the thriving racing town of Malton in North Yorkshire. In addition to carrying out all yard duties Martin also undertakes routine maintenance jobs and takes pride in keeping the grass mowed and the field boundaries secure. Martin enjoys turning his hand to tasks which allow Ruth and the riding staff to concentrate on training and exercising the racehorses. Martin is a pivotal member of the team and brings to the job a wealth of experience and transferable skills gained in other industries.

Employment in the horseracing industry is accessible to absolutely everyone. There are no barriers and whatever your aspirations with a positive work ethic and a “can do” attitude you will receive the warmest of welcomes.

If Martins story has inspired you and you’d like to chat with us about your own individual circumstances, please contact us or better still please come along to one of our monthly Open Mornings and observe the training we offer.
