Matthew joined the NHC in May 2015 as a full-time Instructor, where he was employed to deliver and train Foundation Course learners to aspire to work in the horseracing industry. His role as Training Manager began in April 2021.

Prior to joining the college, Matthew worked in the horseracing industry for 5 years, he first started out as a stable groom in 2006 after graduating from the BRS. He then completed his level 3 racehorse care and management course in 2009, whilst also pursuing his jockey career as an amateur and then conditional jockey for Emma Lavelle in 2008.

Matthew then left racing in 2011 to go to university where he studied Sports Coaching and Fitness for 3 years and attained a First-Class Honours Degree. Later completing his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Matthew brings with him a wealth of knowledge from various sources and is determined to deliver high-quality learning opportunities to all young people, by enabling them to grow, develop their skills and hopefully aspire to work in the horseracing or other equine industries.
